“I felt as though everyone in the room was holding their breath with me.”
— Belle Chi
PARIS — Featured in Steinway & Sons’ official Pourquoi Steinway series, concert pianist and Young Steinway Artist Belle Chi reflects on her lifelong connection with Steinway and recalls an unforgettable moment from the recording of her Chopin piano concertos in Paris.
Having played Steinway pianos since she first began learning the instrument, Belle describes her relationship with the instrument as instinctive and deeply personal. She also reflects on a moment in the recording studio when a powerful musical climax gave way to a suspended, dreamlike passage—creating a shared sense of stillness throughout the room.

Why Steinway ?

Belle Chi:

“I feel very privileged to have been surrounded by Steinway pianos from day one—literally since I first started playing the piano. Whenever I play a Steinway, it feels like speaking my native language. It just feels so natural.”

What is your favorite memory with a Steinway?
Belle Chi:

“It actually happened just a few days ago, while I was recording my album featuring Chopin’s piano concertos. There is a moment when the music builds to a powerful emotional climax, then suddenly gives way to something dreamy and atmospheric. I felt as though everyone in the room was holding their breath with me. It was truly magical.”
